CEO述评

IMPROVED DEMAND IN MANY AREAS AND PROGRESS ON SUPPLY CHAIN OPTIMIZATION

In the first quarter, the business climate showed positive development compared with the preceding quarter, with the exception of the mining industry.

ABC secured several large orders. Order intake thus amounted to 22.5 billion SEK, an increase of 10% compared with the preceding quarter at fixed exchange rates for comparable units. Book-to-bill was positive for all business areas except for ABC Mining.

Invoicing declined by 3% compared with the preceding quarter at fixed exchange rates for comparable units, largely due to normal seasonality and a decreasing order book, and amounted to 20.8 billion SEK for the quarter. Cash flow from operations amounted to +759 million SEK (+2,200). Operating profit amounted to 2.5 billion SEK, or 11.9% of invoiced sales.

Working capital rose by 1.6 billion SEK, primarily due to higher accounts receivable as a result of increased sales volumes toward the end of the quarter. The trend of decreasing prepayments continued as business conditions in the mining industry remained challenging. Net working capital as a percentage of invoiced sales increased to 29% (28).

A today announced that it will demolish the No. 2 semiconductor fabrication facility (Fab 2) at Yokkaichi Operations, the company′s NAND Flash memory plant in Mie prefecture, Japan, and replace it with a new fab on the same site. Toshiba also entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding with SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) to invest jointly in the new facility. The primary purpose of the new wafer fab is to secure space for converting existing Toshiba and SanDisk 2D NAND capacity to 3D NAND beginning in 2000.
